Until the Violence Stops: Los Angeles (UTVSLA), a collection of artists, educators, entertainers and activists dedicated to ending violence against women and girls with a focus on Los Angeles county, is holding a series of plays, events and readings to raise money for their cause.

Make your plans now, because Saturday, August 2 is the date of the staged reading of “A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant, a Rave and a Prayer,” which features former CURVE cover girl, CSI’s Jorja Fox (Vol. 17#5). The reading comprises works by Maya Angelou and other renowned authors on the topic of violence; ticket sales benefit the Gay and Lesbian Domestic Violence Center.

Beth Grant will appear in “Any One of Us” on Sunday, August 3. You may recognize her from her current Logo series Sordid Lives, as well as from any of the roles on her lengthy list of movie and television work. This play chronicles the lives of women on death row and is based on their true-life stories. Also giving their time and talent to the cause are Berlinda Tolbert, famous for her role as Ginny on The Jeffersons and Jenny Gago, who has appeared on loads of TV shows, from Dallas to Cagney & Lacey to The X-Files.

On Wednesday, August 6, UTVS presents an evening of women who rock: The event’s title is Acclaimed All-Girl Bands Stand United Against Violence, and the show is produced by CURVE contributor Jenny Sherwin, a.k.a. Sheena Metal. Scheduled to rock are Danielle Egnew and the Whiskey Roadshow Band, Rachel Rizner Band & Red Velvet Cupcakes and Karissa Winett.

Friday, August 8 is a night for young women benefiting the Homeboy Industries, which assists former gang members and at-risk youth. The performance, “It’s Hard Out There for a Girl,” features a cast of youth sharing what the phrase means to them.

The festival is modeled after Eve Ensler’s arts benefit, Until the Violence Stops: NYC.

Include any of these events in your evening plans and enjoy your night with the added knowledge that you are helping a great cause. For locations, times and ticket information, visit http://www.utvsla.org”>utvsla.org.
