Curve founder and publisher, Frances Stevens was diagnosed with a nerve disorder a few years ago that has left her dependent on a wheelchair. Now you can help make a difference in her recovery with a click of your mouse.
HGTV (producers of shows like Design on a Dime, and House Hunters) has partnered with Rebuilding Together, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Natural Resources Defense Council, for its Change the World, Start at Home campaign to rebuild communities with a focus on environmental and social awareness. The vibrant, historical Fillmore District in San Francisco, where our illustrious publisher lives, has been nominated for this much deserved, and much needed makeover. By voting for the Fillmore District, you automatically aid in the renovation efforts to make Stevens’ home more wheelchair accessible.
The other projects associated with the campaign are an open space greening project and educational facility’s facade lift. The Ella Hill Hutch Community Center has provided tutoring, mentoring and homeless shelter to the Fillmore community for over 25 years. HGTV, its partners and volunteers seek to renovate the building’s deteriorating exterior to reflect the hopeful encouragement of its staff and programs.
A historical landmark built in 1920, the John Muir Elementary School educates low-income and behaviorally challenged students—some of which have been denied education elsewhere. The PTA of the school—which includes parents as well as concerned neighbors—hopes to rehabilitate the school’s gardens with horticultural contributions and improve the greening zone of the surrounding community.
Voting for the Fillmore District will bring life, vibrancy and community development to a home, educational facility and communal space in need of assistance. The winners will be announced Jan. 1 during the Rose Bowl Parade on HGTV. Your vote can be cast daily until Dec. 21 and can bring to Stevens the same support, facilitation and peace of mind that, through Curve magazine, she has given the lesbian community over the past 17 years. Change the world. Start at home.
