San Francisco’s sexy beasts and metrosexual butches are gearing up for the first ever all-men’s-clothing swap in the city November 4. With insta-catwalks, drink specials and hot beats, Swap SF promises to be a hot event. But why should you care? This men’s swap isn’t just for men. Organizers have taken special care to attract lesbian and transgender attendees—a rarity even among women’s clothing swaps (except in Portland where fat girl swaps are increasingly popular with dykes) and a portion of proceeds goes to AIDS Emergency Fund of San Francisco.
If you’re visiting or local and you want to head into San Francisco to swoop up enough boy clothes to last a year? Here’s how it goes: On Saturday Nov.4 at 12 to 4 p.m,, go to The Café (a legendary queer club at 2367 Market Street at Castro) and pay your cover charge. (Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door).
You bring a bag (or more) of clothes that you want to get rid of or never wear (or, as organizer Jason suggests, “have been taking up space for more than three months”). Once you hand that bag off, the crew will go and organize it. You are now able to go and try on anything you like and take home as much swag as you want. “You can walk out with twice as much stuff as you bring,” says Jason.
A few caveats will keep the Sapphic scenesters happy at the swap, though: It’s 21 and up only. You must bring only men’s clothing. Remember that people tend to change in the open because when you’re trying on that many items of clothing it’s the speediest approach and fashion shows tend to just happen impromptu — especially after a few drinks.
From noon to 4 p.m. the event is tickets-only but at 4 crafty DIYers can pop in. All leftover clothing and a portion of all the proceeds will be donated to AIDS Emergency Fund of San Francisco. For more info or to order tickets, go to swapSF.com.
